Tackling Community Polarization

A transformational approach

The ongoing violence in the Middle East has fueled anxiety and strain in communities across Canada. Digital Public Square seeks to enable meaningful conversations about the impact of these tragic events and encourage honest, brave, and transformational dialogues. We want to create space for candid opinions and push back on the hate, fear and dehumanization taking hold in our society.

This project comes at a critical moment, as polarization grows and instances of hate rise against affected communities, particularly Palestinian, Jewish, Muslim, Arab, and Israeli Canadians.

In these difficult times, many of us are seeking spaces where we can speak honestly, be heard with dignity, and explore how to work together toward a society that feels safe, compassionate, and just. This project offers a foundation for such engagement, one that begins by strengthening trust within and between communities, and evolves into a truly inclusive, representative space where diverse voices and narratives are centred.

Our aim is not to “solve” differences in beliefs or opinions, but to enable productive dialogue on polarizing and emotional issues, identify shared values, offer space for diverse points of view, and counter the dehumanization of religious and ethnic communities in Canada.

The focus on the shared value of human rights, and shared experiences of grief, intimidation, and exclusion, grounds the work and creates room for reflection, relationship-building, and dialogue. We do not shy away from complexity—we embrace it as the path to transformation.

In collaboration with C-Space Group and Khouri Conversations, Digital Public Square will develop research-based digital tools, campaigns, and community dialogue sessions to find creative ways to hold meaningful conversations and challenge binary thinking about polarizing issues. The project will engage Palestinian, Jewish, Muslim, Arab, and Israeli communities in Canada, build capacity for empathy, self expression and critical thinking, and foster the ability of these communities to engage in honest, productive conversations with each other and within themselves.
